First Queen
Margie Neal Lawless
1937

Margie Neal Lawless was born on January 7, 1925 in Panola County to Arthur Howell Lawless and Christine Howell. She moved to Gladewater as a young child and grew up in a home on Gilmer Hwy. Her father was with Magnolia Oil Company, and her mother raised her to be an extraordinary woman, mother and leader. She was named after Margie Neal - the first female to serve in the Texas Senate. She had three siblings, Myrtie, Patsy, and Hal. Patsy died of pneumonia at age 7.
In 1937, the year before the Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo became a PRCA rodeo, Margie was name Miss Gladewater Rodeo, and served as the very first queen.
Margie graduated from Gladewater High School in 1941. Later that year, she married James Moss, Jr., who was also a Gladewater graduate. He joined the Air Force after Pearl Harbor, and as many couple did during that time, they eloped.
During the war, Margie worked as an Executive Secretary to the president of the Sohio Oil Company. Later on, her husband got out of the Air Force, went to college, and was transferred to New Orleans for a job. They raised three children there - Molly, Jamie and Amanda. Margie and James (called Jay) were married for an astounding 69 years.
On November 8, 2010, Margie passed away at her home in Shenandoah, Texas.
Margie was an outstanding woman, and the Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo is proud that she was able to be the first lady to represent our rodeo.
